- September 04, 2008 Inside fencing and gates going in. Fountains going in. No known schedule for shaded areas with benches, based on conversation with contractor at site.
- September 03, 2008 Benches are in; ** no covered areas ** though. Last of the concrete appears to have been poured; some [exterior] fencing waiting for concrete curing, it appears. Not sure about inside fencing or gates for entryways.
- What a shame! If there are pools and rivers of water, there will be pools and rivers of urine. This was a major property of Decomposed Granite: urine passes thru to the soil rather than sit on the surface and decompose, get on dogs as they run and play. Far less chance of smell with the DG, and less chance of ugly bugs growing.
- September 01, 2008 Went by site again today. Rain tells the tale. Rivers running on top of the surface that is supposedly 'as good as' and 'with same properties as' Decomposed Granite. Muddy as well. It appears there is NO DRAINAGE for water to escape the concrete surrounds; pools of water as well as rivers from most trees (can the trees survive if constantly flooded?). Well, at least there is some concrete to walk on. And thank goodness there will be pet cleanoff stations since the 'almost DG' appears to be mud waiting for water.
A shame, with all the money being spent to make this park top notch.
- August 26, 2008 Went by site again today. Sod installed in the 'small-breed' area. 'Not quite decomposed granite' surface material being brought in and levelled/etc for 1/2 of park.
- August 14, 2008 Went by site again today. Ribbon cutting end of this month (August) according to contractor I talked with at the site. No idea where to get more information; County web site has NOTHING (that I could find).
- August 14, 2008 Contractor said 1/2 of park that is slated for grass will be bare mud, uh, land, and weeds until second phase (HOPEFULLY next year is the word); sprinklers aren't even going in. Sprinklers are in, and *sod* going in this year, for the small-breed area, though. Trees are now planted! (29, I believe)
- August 14, 2008 SWAMP still going to be a swamp, undercutting the sidewalk every day even in summer with just the sprinklers.
- July 21, 2008 Time after time I brought up the 'swamp' on the north/northeast of Animal Control. From the VERY FIRST day, when Jim Riding and I went to look at the site. Mr Riding identified the definite need for drainage at that location. Yet I find the concrete poured, a swamp, and no way to put in drainage without breaking up the concrete walkway. Tax dollars at waste, er, work.
- July 21, 2008 Went by the site again today. Fencing is up around the outside of a good portion.
- June 28, 2008 Went by the site again today. Doesn't look like anything has been touched since the last visit. Is the City of West Jordan running the project after all?
- June 17, 2008 Went by the site. Poles for fencing are installed! Cement is poured and curing!
- 1st week June 2008 It was passed on to me that crushed gravel is going to be used instead of Decomposed Granite (this came from Emery Crook at County). If so, I expect the grass to be killed quickly since no one will want their dogs' paws destroyed. Moreover, the mess that will be created will mean the park can be expected to go downhill fast.
- May 15, 2008 Went by the site and took pictures (on this site main page). Construction has begun! Not sure when, nor anticipated completion date. 30-60 days was thrown around earlier, but that was when the city was still in the picture.
- January 10, 2008 Told today officially the same as Tuesday night. Click for Design
- January 09, 2008 Told last night, unoficially, that County may need to 'phase' the dog park based on budget. $383,000 and a need to build it in phases? I can't wait to see this dog park!
- 2008 County Budget $383k in budget for the Dog Park on County Council recommended budget!
- August 21 2007 Spoke at County Council meeting, asking for update. Mayor Corroon himself called, and addressed the timing. Construction of park should occur in March-June 2008.
- August 18 2007 Bidding now not until 'October' I was told at the West Jordan Days.
- July 13 2007 Bidding likely not until 'August/September'. I'd say that kills it for this year. Disgusting
- May 16 2007 SL Tribune article.. "Construction could start in September".
- May 15 2007 Unanimous approval, and vote for Mayor to sign Interlocal Agreement with County.
- May 01 2007 Newest Interlocal Agreement (County-City) evidently ironed out. At West Jordan, and I was told tonight that it is likely to be signed this month, possibly as early as 'next week'.
- My Take. Salt Lake County is dedicated to building the WJ Dog Park as soon as feasible. Some at West Jordan City do not appear to wish this project to succeed.
- April 10 2007 County Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting. It took about 15 seconds and the funding for the West Jordan Dog Park (County Project) was reinstated unanimously (had been 'lost' when year changed and no provisions made to carry the funding to new year).
- April 03 2007 City Council Meeting. Melissa Johnson reported on County Master Plan Dog Park meeting. "County considers WJ Dog Park as no more than a 'Proposed Future Site', need new Funding and Interlocal Agreement." and "no intention of building for at LEAST a year".
- February 20 2007 - Morning Asked by Mayor Newton if I would be interested in serving as the West Jordan representative on the County Dog Parks committee. Agreed.
- February 20 2007 - CC Meeting Mayor suggested above. Room chilled by at least 20 degrees. Council Member Johnson volunteered for the committee after the meeting. Contact her: melissaj@wjordan.com (801) 282-4850
- January 4th 2007 Told today that it will likely be Fall 2007, and possibly into 2008, before County builds.
- Don't want $400,000? We'll give you $200,000 more. Tuesday 21 Nov 2006. County Council giving West Jordan another $200,000 for softball field at Ron Wood, since they didn't take the $400,000.
- Everything has changed! Tuesday 17 Oct 2006. County taking back the $400,000 and building the dog park themselves (same location).
- Design Plan Tuesday 17 Oct 2006. County (Committee of the Whole) discussing Dog Park (1:00pm)
- Design Plan Tuesday 10 Oct 2006. County (Committee of the Whole) discussing Dog Park (12:45pm) PostPoned until 10/17/2006
- Design Plan Tuesday 03 Oct 2006. Design plan with County changes on agenda as last item of the night in regular session. City says 'No' to building dog park; sends $400,000 gift back to County.
- Design Plan Tuesday 19 Sept 2006. I was informed that a Handicapped parking space, in front of Animal Control and usable by park patrons, was added to the base design somewhere between City Council approving the design and the design going to the County. As well, cement walkways were added so patrons in wheelchairs could get to the water fountain and restroom. Two critical items fixed!
- Design Plan Tuesday 19 Sept 2006. 1pm. County Council is forwarding the letter to West Jordan with park changes as Mayor Corroon's office asked. They are also adding parking area(s) to the list, to help prevent conflict between baseball patrons and dogs/owners.
- Design Plan Tuesday 19 Sept 2006. 1pm. County Mayor Corroon asking Committee of the Whole to require additional features be included in the dog park. Not on County Council Agenda due to not 100% positive approval requested (I was told).
- Design Plan Tuesday 19 Sept 2006. 1pm Presentation/Discussion by Mayor's Office during Committee of the Whole (meeting starts 1pm), which is County Council without ability for public to speak. Nothing on County Council Agenda that I could find.
- Design Plan at County Parks & Recreation weeks of 9/4/06 & 9/11/06. Scheduled to go before COUNTY Council September 19th 2006 for approval.
- City Council Meeting 9/5/2006 Mayor Newton tried to prevent me from speaking during Citizen Comments,
expressing my distaste for what Rob Bennett stated in e-mail and for the message the Council sent on 8/15/2006.
- Salt Lake County Mayor Corroon & West Jordan City Mayor Newton, along with 'others', to meet week of September 4th 2006, I'm told, to discuss (design ?), (differences ?).
- City Council Meeting 8/15/2006 Mayor Newton finally admits to being the one who torpedoed the dog park project - after specifically denying it for months.
- City Council Meeting 8/15/2006 Design approved as presented.
No wheelchair access to water or restroom, nor inside of park. No covered areas. No lighting. No parking.
