Is Bill Clinton the only US President not to slip into the shadows after leaving office?

He was just appointed by the UN to lead the Haiti rebuilding efforts. He's the only ex-president you keep hearing about even a decade after leaving office. It seems the other ex-presidents you just never hear of them again; they just disappear. Or am I wrong?

Opinions have ranged from Jefferson saying former presidents should be taken out and shot upon finishing their term so as not to interfere, to Taft endorsing a more humane method involving chloroform prior to being offered the position of Chief Justice years after finishing his term as President. Theodore Roosevelt attempted to run for a 3rd term under another party, Grover Cleveland ran successfully for a 2nd term 4 years after losing reelection for a 2nd consecutive term. Congress attempted to address the lure of fame and activism by providing the office with sufficient compensation to permit a full and complete retirement upon leaving office.

More recent presidents have ranged from hiring agents after leaving office (Ford, Nixon, and several others) to asserting executive privilege to avoid testimony at Congressional hearings (Truman & we'll see on Bush 43) and claiming they just want to be private citizens.

When the presidency was just an administrative elected office limited to only those duties specifically enumerated and reinforced by the oath taken, as intended by the founders, there was little need for the public to be concerned with the actions of a former president. The position itself was not nearly as prominent as it is today. As the power of the president has grown through the 20th Century, so has the propensity for dispute between current and former administrations. The more the president does, the more the president has to explain. The more the president has to explain, the more people seek out their opinions on the current president.

Held to its Constitutional limitations, the office lends itself towards permitting former occupants to slip into obscurity. However, the modern ego-maniacs transformed the office into THEIR office, more than the office co-equal to the other 2 branches.

Miami takes on first ACC opponent
