Tips on how to train my Brittany to walk on a leash.?
Hi there. I have a 7 month old Brittany Spaniel. She's a fantastic addition to our family, wonderful with my children, great around other dogs....I am having a terrible time walking her. Last weekend I took her for a short walk and she was pulling so hard her eyelids turned purple and she started to pass out! I had to calm her down and give her water, it scared me. I almost had to carry her home. She's extremely hyper.
I just would really appreciate any tips on how to safely get her to walk with us!
Typically, Spaniel breeds are hyper. Enroll in a Dog Obedience class where the instructor's philosophy is to teach YOU how to train Your Dog. This will take time, patience, and committment. If you don't have it, don't bother. My black lab was terrible on a leash. However, my instructor moved me from a simple choker chain to a choker-pinch chain that had dull studs resting against the skin of the dog's neck. Once you lightly jerked the chain, the studs would pinch the neck, causing discomfort but no physical damage. It worked like a charm. Another thing, with dogs of this working class breed, it is best to find a place and a time (at least once or twice a week) where the dog can run free of the leash. Let he/she run themselves ragged. Keep this regimen constant and consistent. You will notice a huge difference. Best of luck!
