How do you tell if the finish is all removed from a piece of natural colored wood?
I am trying to refinish a natural piece and stain it a darker color, but don't know how to tell when all the old finish is off. I am afraid to start staining in case some is left and the stain absorbs funny. Any hints?
Forget "sanding it off" -- it is arguably the worst way to remove a finish. Use a chemical stripper as it it much more effective at removing the finish. I like to rinse with acetone that is a strong solvent and will remove residual finish. Let it dry, then do a _light_ sanding with 180-200 grit sandpaper. A light wipe with mineral spirits when you are done will often show areas that have not been fully stripped.
